Digital Twin Technologies

What is it?

A Digital Twin is a virtual simulation of the workstations, cells, processes or production lines throughout your factory, based on real production data gathered by the other smart manufacturing tools in your arsenal.

Why would we need it?

Digital Twin technologies are an excellent tool for simulating changes throughout the factory without the risk or cost associated with changing the production line in real life. In effect, you can use them to prove the value and efficiency of any tweaks you want to make, before you make them.

What are the expected benefits and potential challenges?

Using this technology you can test new production layouts, process changes or additional hires and see how these changes will influence output at a fraction of the cost of doing it for real. Digital twins can also help identify production bottlenecks before they occur, and carry out predictive maintenance to reduce the risk of machinery breaking down and maximise OEE.

Because the virtual simulation depends on accurate data from your manufacturing process – using algorithms to predict how changes of input will affect output – a programme of digital transformation is often necessary to get the right infrastructure in place first.
